Following up on our previous entry about the on-going “Champagne” controversy, we spotted another news items in the NY Times.
A biscuit maker in Champagne, Switzerland is being forced to cease using the brand name (”de Champagne”) his family has been marketing since the 1930s. In exchange for landing rights for SwissAir - a now defunct airline - in airports of the European Union, Switzerland forbid residents of Champagne, Switzerland to use their town name on products.
Is this over-reaching? Is Switzerland being bullied, compared to Russia or the USA (as the NY Times article mentions), regarding the use of “Champagne”?
Personally, I can kind of understand fighting about a wine from Switzerland being called Champagne, but biscuits? I find this difficult to rationalize. What do you think?
