A trip to Doylestown

January 7th, 2008 · 1 Comment

Wine and cheese seem to be natural cousins.

Why? I don’t know. It just seems to go that way.

Anyway, we were in Doylestown, PA the other night for “First Friday” when we stumbled upon a great new shop. Andre’s Wine & Cheese Shop. Unfortunately, we didn’t get a chance to sample the Wycombe Vineyards wines as we arrived at 9:04 p.m. The vagaries of the PA liquor laws forbid Andre’s from selling alcohol after 9 pm. We did sample some cheeses, and the Villa Manodori Balsamic Vinegar Artigianale. I found it be entirely decadent. With an amazing nose, and a powerful taste, I can really imagine how yummy it would be with a great tomato slice and a wedge of fresh mozzarella on a hunk of crusty Italian bread. The person waiting on me suggested it over ice cream, which I think would be great too. I regret not picking up a bottle at $45. We wound up buying a really enjoyable raspberry sauce that I suspect will make a yummy raspberry vinaigrette.

The staff was really great, and very apologetic about the PA liquor laws. Of course, I live in PA so I quite understand how ridiculous they really are.

If you ever find yourself in Doylestown, sample a Bucks Country wine as a pre-meal treat. Then hit Puck’s after dinner for a night cap.

We liked Andre’s too. Nice cheese platter, and where else can you get a chance to taste so many Bucks County wines?
